FARM UPDATES

Forget about ANDY PHILLIPS, MITCH JONES and MIKE VENTO for now despite all putting up some nice numbers in Columbus. All eyes are on MELKY CABRERA who was promoted last week for one reason only. Is he ready to play in NY? I think Brian Cashman, Gene Michael and George Steinbrenner should forget about making a trade for an OF. Besides, with 3 starters out and perhaps not so good news on (Carl) Pavano, they should be focusing on getting a starting pitcher.

Back to Melky...Well the guy is off to a blazing start in Columbus hitting already 3 HRs and hitting nearly .400. Whether it is a fluke or not, I'm still going with my earlier prediction that this guy will be our future CF, however it may come much sooner. Meanwhile Melky may not be the only guy that the Yankees are looking at. Despite Vento's hot June, Mitch hitting almost 20 HRs, the Yankees may feel that KENNY THOMPSON (KT) may be the better player behind Melky. Thompson who was having a standout season in Trenton was called up over the weekend, pushing Reese to the DH spot.

Also another interesting notes in Columbus...Phillips in my opinion should be up in NY (no question about that) if they find a spot for him. Phillips has been playing some 3B over the weekend. If he is still available after the trading deadline, I think it is safe to say that the Yankees will plan on putting him at 1B next season.

Also ALEX GRAMAN who had some nice starts this season and because of the promotion of LHP WAYNE FRANKLIN, Graman has been inserted in a new role as the Clippers lefty reliever. Graman made his first relief appearance on Saturday 1 1/3 innings of no hits, no runs.

It is nice to see JORGE DEPAULA pitching again and despite his 4.50 plus ERA, it seems that DePaula could very well be somewhere in our rotation in the late summer.
